January 17, 2024
In a bittersweet turn of events, Chicago Fire fans bid farewell to one of its longest-running and cherished characters, Sylvie Brett, portrayed by the talented Kara Killmer. After gracing the screens for ten remarkable seasons, Brett embarks on a new chapter in her life, leaving behind the Windy City and Firehouse 51 for a fresh start in Portland.
The Departure: A Heartfelt Farewell
The Season 12 premiere, titled “Barely Gone,” sets the stage for Brett’s departure. Amidst the bustling firehouse, Brett gathers her closest comrades, Mouch (Christian Stolte) and Violet (Hanako Greensmith), to share a life-changing decision. With a mix of excitement and nostalgia, she reveals her plans to leave Chicago and join her fiancé, Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), in Portland.
Gone are the days of uncertainty and longing; Brett and Casey have finally found their way back to each other, and they’re ready to embark on a new journey together. Brett’s decision stems from a profound realization that after years of yearning and missed opportunities, it’s time for them to seize their chance at lasting happiness.
Love Blossoms: The Road to Reunion
Brett’s journey in Chicago Fire has been a testament to resilience, growth, and the enduring power of love. Introduced in Season 3 as a skilled paramedic, Brett quickly became a fan favorite, captivating audiences with her unwavering dedication, quick wit, and compassionate spirit.
Over the seasons, Brett’s personal life intertwined with the drama and camaraderie of Firehouse 51. She navigated complex relationships, faced personal challenges, and forged unbreakable bonds with her fellow firefighters. Yet, it was her connection with Casey that ignited a spark that would forever change the course of her life.
Their “Brettsey” romance, a slow-burn and fan-favorite storyline, kept viewers on the edge of their seats. Despite obstacles and separations, their love for each other remained steadfast. When Casey departed from the show, it seemed like their happily ever after was destined to remain unfulfilled.
However, in a twist of fate, Casey returned for a cameo appearance in Season 11, rekindling the flame of their love. This time, he was determined to make things right, and he proposed to Brett, a moment that sent shockwaves through the fandom.

Why did Brett leave Chicago Fire?
In the Season 12 premiere (“Barely Gone”), Brett revealed to her Firehouse 51 loved ones that she planned to leave Chicago. After accepting Matthew Casey’s (Jesse Spencer) heartfelt proposal, Brett and Casey decided she would move with him to Portland to begin their married life together.
Why did Kara Killmer leave Chicago Fire?
Killmer has spoken fondly of her time in Chicago and on the series. She shared a carousel of photos to Instagram in November 2023 from her early days in the city and reflected, “These are the very first few pictures I took, or was tagged in, when I first came to Chicago. Going up in the Squad 1 basket was my first exposure to the CFD—some of the best firefighters in the country! The view from my very first apartment was absolutely stunning and the beginning of a love affair with the gorgeous city of Chicago!”
All about Sylvie Brett, Firehouse 51’s sweetheart
A regular since Season 3, Brett is a paramedic who’s made appearances on both Chicago Med and Chicago P.D., making her firmly established in the One Chicago universe.
After some back-and-forth with her hometown fiancé, Brett dumps him for good and moves on with some of the men from the firehouse, most notably Casey, with whom she has a very strong connection. “Brettsey” was a slow-burn romance and a fan favorite, though when Casey left the show, it seemed to squash hopes of a potential happily ever after. Then, Casey came back for a cameo in Season 11 and ended up proposing to Brett! (She later accepted, of course.)
“We’ve always seen Sylvie in a relationship. We’ve always seen her in a romance. She’s a hopeless romantic,” said Killmer.
Though the One Chicago shows deal mainly in drama, off-camera, Killmer loves to goof around with her cast mates, and often posts snapshots of them being chummy on social media. She especially loves “The Ladies,” a.k.a. co-stars Miranda Rae Mayo and Hanako Greensmith, a.k.a. “Fire Trio.”
