A Legacy of Spirit and Camaraderie

In the heart of Arkansas Tech University, a furry ambassador reigns supreme, embodying the spirit of unity and camaraderie that defines the campus community. Jerry the Bulldog, the esteemed campus ambassador, is poised to celebrate a momentous milestone – his first birthday. This joyous occasion calls for a grand celebration, inviting the entire ATU family to come together and honor Jerry’s remarkable contributions.

Reviving a Cherished Tradition

The reinstatement of a campus ambassador at Arkansas Tech University marks a significant revival, rekindling a long-lost tradition that once brought joy and a sense of belonging to the campus community. After a 76-year hiatus, Jerry the Bulldog was unanimously elected as the official campus ambassador on October 23, 2013, by the ATU Student Government Association. This decision reflects the university’s commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing the vibrancy of the present.

The Original Jerry: A Beloved Figure in Tech History

The original Jerry, a canine companion of remarkable charm, played an integral role in the daily life of Arkansas Tech in the mid-1930s. As the cherished pet of William O. Young, who served as secretary and bursar from 1917 to 1941 and interim president from 1923 to 1925, Jerry became an indelible part of the campus fabric. His son, Robert A. Young Sr., who held various administrative positions at the university from 1941 to 1984, including interim president in 1972, continued the family’s dedication to Arkansas Tech. Today, Dr. Robert A. Young Jr. serves as president of the Arkansas Tech Foundation and remains a staunch supporter of Tech athletics.

Jerry, the original, spent his days at the armory, the epicenter of campus activity and the home of Arkansas Tech home basketball games. He was lovingly adopted by the students and guardsmen of National Guard Battery F, seamlessly integrating into the campus community. An article published in the Arka Tech student newspaper in 1936 aptly captured Jerry’s ubiquitous presence, stating that he was “always present at anything of importance at the armory.”

Jerry Charles Young I, II, and III: Upholding a Legacy of Spirit

The legacy of Jerry the Bulldog continued with the introduction of Jerry Charles Young I in 2013. He served as campus ambassador until his retirement in 2022, making significant contributions to the university community. Jerry Charles Young II succeeded him, holding the position from 2022 until 2023. Unfortunately, due to a hip condition that would have hindered his ability to fulfill his duties, Jerry Charles Young II retired in April 2023.

Jerry Charles Young III, the current campus ambassador, was born on February 23, 2023, and assumed his role on April 24, 2023. With boundless energy and infectious enthusiasm, Jerry III has quickly become a beloved figure on campus. He attends a variety of events, including campus gatherings, alumni functions, and Wonder Boys and Golden Suns athletic competitions, spreading joy and cheer wherever he goes.
