Chicago Bulls Triumph Over Toronto Raptors in Hard-Fought Encounter
Nikola Vucevic Dominates Paint, DeMar DeRozan Haunts Former Team in Bulls’ 116-110 Victory
January 19, 2024 (Toronto, Ontario) – In a captivating NBA showdown at Scotiabank Arena, the Chicago Bulls put an end to their four-game losing streak in Toronto, defeating the home team Raptors by a score of 116-110. Nikola Vucevic, the Bulls’ dynamic center, led the charge with a commanding performance, tallying 24 points and 14 rebounds, while DeMar DeRozan, in a poignant return to his former stomping grounds, added 24 points to the Bulls’ tally.
Coby White, a rising star in the Bulls’ lineup, contributed 23 points, further bolstering the team’s offensive firepower. Patrick Williams chipped in with 12 points, while Alex Caruso and Ayo Dosunmu each contributed 10 points, showcasing the Bulls’ balanced scoring attack.
The Bulls’ dominance in the paint was a key factor in their victory, as they outscored the Raptors 74-50 in this crucial area. Vucevic, with his imposing size and skillful post play, took full advantage of his advantage, connecting on 12 of his 17 attempts from inside the 3-point line.
“I knew I had a little bit of a size advantage and I was trying to take advantage of it,” Vucevic said after the game, reflecting on his dominant performance.
Bulls guard Zach LaVine, however, had a less fortunate outing. After scoring eight points in 24 minutes of play, LaVine was forced to leave the court due to a rolled right ankle early in the third quarter. He briefly returned for a four-minute stint later in the period, but his mobility was visibly limited, and he played just over two minutes in the fourth quarter.
“He rolled his ankle, that’s all I heard,” Bulls coach Billy Donovan said, expressing concern about LaVine’s injury. “I didn’t get a chance to see it on tape.”
LaVine’s recent return to action, after missing 17 games due to inflammation in his right foot, added to the Bulls’ concerns. Donovan noted that LaVine’s movement appeared restricted upon his return to the game, despite his determination to continue playing.
“I could just tell when he was back in there, I didn’t feel like he was moving great,” Donovan said. “I know he was trying. I think he wanted to keep going, just to keep himself fresh.”
On the Raptors’ side, Scottie Barnes led the scoring with 31 points, just one shy of his career best. RJ Barrett added 17 points, but Toronto’s overall performance was marred by their struggles from beyond the arc.
The Raptors shot a dismal 4 for 32 from 3-point range in their previous loss to Boston, and while they managed to make a season-high 20 3-pointers in their subsequent win over Miami, their shooting woes returned against the Bulls. They missed their first nine attempts from distance, setting the tone for a difficult night from long range.
“We missed six or seven straight 3s that were good open shots and it just spiraled with us, affected our defense there,” Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic said, lamenting their shooting struggles.
Toronto finished the game shooting just 10 for 38 from 3-pointers, a stark contrast to their recent hot streak.
Bruce Brown, acquired by the Raptors in the trade that sent two-time All-Star Pascal Siakam to Indiana, made his debut for Toronto, contributing 15 points despite his unfamiliarity with the team’s plays. Fellow newcomers Jordan Nwora and Kira Lewis Jr. were active but did not see any playing time.
The Raptors trailed by 11 points after the first quarter but managed to rally, cutting the deficit to five points at halftime. Barnes’ efforts in the third quarter kept Toronto within striking distance, but the Bulls maintained their lead and ultimately secured the victory.
Toronto center Jakob Poeltl remained sidelined due to a sprained left ankle, marking his sixth consecutive absence from the lineup.
