The King Center has announced the passing of Dexter Scott King, the youngest son of civil rights icons Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. Dexter, who carried the legacy of his father’s work and the protection of his intellectual property, succumbed to a valiant battle with prostate cancer on January 22, 2024, at the age of 62.

A Life Dedicated to Preserving His Father’s Legacy

Born on January 30, 1961, in Atlanta, Georgia, Dexter was named after Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, where his father served his first pastorate. At the tender age of seven, Dexter experienced the tragic loss of his father, who was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968.

Growing up in Atlanta, Dexter followed in his father’s footsteps, attending Ebenezer Baptist Church, where his grandfather served as pastor. He graduated from Frederick Douglas High School, where he actively participated in football and various school organizations. Inspired by his father’s legacy, Dexter pursued higher education at Morehouse College in Atlanta.

Dexter’s life was dedicated to perpetuating his father’s legacy and protecting the intellectual property left behind by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He served as both Chairman of The King Center and President of the King Estate, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to safeguarding his father’s work. Through his dedication and passion, Dexter became well-versed in intellectual property law, ensuring the proper management and licensing of his father’s legacy.

Creative Pursuits and Family Life

Known for his uncanny resemblance to his father, Dexter ventured into acting, portraying Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 2002 television movie “The Rosa Parks Story.” His love for the creative arts initially led him to California, but his family duty called him back, prompting him to strike a balance between his passion for the arts and his responsibilities to the King family legacy.

In July 2013, Dexter found love and companionship when he married his best friend and longtime partner, Leah Weber, a New Orleans native, former broadcast journalist, entrepreneur, and consultant. Together, they built a life filled with love, support, and unconditional affection, mirroring the bond shared by Dexter’s parents.

Dexter’s passing has left a profound void in the King family, with his sister, Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO of The King Center, expressing heartbreak and seeking strength during this challenging time. Dexter is survived by his devoted wife of 11 years, Leah Weber King; his sister, Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King; his brother, Martin Luther King, III; and his niece, Yolanda Renee King. The King family has requested privacy during this period of mourning and will address media inquiries following a press conference scheduled for Tuesday, January 23, at 10 a.m., at The King Center’s Yolanda D. King Theatre inside Freedom Hall. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
