Iowa State Upsets No. 8 Kansas, Strengthens Big 12 Title Contention

AMES, Iowa

In a thrilling display of grit and determination, Iowa State basketball secured a remarkable 79-75 victory over a formidable No. 8 Kansas squad at Hilton Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. This triumph marked a significant milestone for the Cyclones, as it was their second consecutive win against their southwesterly rivals, having previously defeated Kansas State in a controversial midweek matchup.

This hard-fought victory further solidifies Iowa State’s position in the Big 12 title race, as they join Texas Tech as the only teams with just one conference loss at the halfway point of the regular season. Notably, this is the first time Iowa State has defeated Kansas at home in back-to-back years since 2015 and 2016.

Unleashing a 3-Point Barrage

Iowa State’s victory was fueled by an exceptional 3-point shooting performance, hitting a season-high 14 shots from beyond the arc. This surpassed their previous best of 10 3-pointers made against both Eastern Illinois and Florida A&M during non-conference play.

Cyclone forward Tre King, who entered the game with a modest 3-of-16 record from 3-point range, surprised everyone with a stellar 4-of-7 performance from deep, contributing 21 points to the team’s total. Keshon Gilbert added 16 points, while Tamin Lipsey dished out eight assists.

Kansas’ Late Rally Falls Short

Iowa State managed to build a comfortable 12-point lead in the second half, but Kansas displayed resilience and determination, chipping away at the deficit. The Jayhawks managed to pull within two points with just 70 seconds remaining in the game.

However, Iowa State’s Keshon Gilbert extinguished any hopes of a Kansas comeback, sinking a clutch 3-pointer in the final seconds of the shot clock to seal the victory.

Women’s Game: Iowa State Falls to West Virginia

In a separate contest, the Iowa State women’s basketball team faced disappointment, falling to West Virginia in their Big 12 matchup. This marked the team’s third conference loss of the season.

Honoring a Longtime Official: John Higgins Recognized

During the game, Iowa State took a moment to honor John Higgins, a highly respected referee who has officiated numerous Final Fours and is known for his distinctive blonde hair. Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard presented Higgins with a framed picture of Hilton Coliseum before the game.

Higgins, who hails from nearby Omaha, Nebraska, retired last season after an illustrious 35-year career that included 29 NCAA Tournaments, nine Final Fours, and two national title games. He currently serves as the coordinator of officials for the Western Basketball Officiating Consortium.

Iowa State fans, who often expressed their disapproval of Higgins’ officiating during his career, showed their appreciation and respect with a round of cheers during the presentation.

Upcoming Schedule: Breather Before Baylor Clash

Following a grueling week that featured two intense games and allegations of huddle spying by Kansas State, Iowa State will enjoy a brief respite. The Cyclones will not have their customary mid-week game and will instead prepare for their next matchup against No. 14 Baylor in Waco on Saturday.

The Bears, who have lost their last two games on the road, will be looking to bounce back at home against Iowa State. Notably, the Cyclones swept Baylor in three games during last season’s campaign.

Iowa State will be eager to continue their momentum and strengthen their position in the Big 12 title race as they head into the second half of the conference schedule.
