Rhode Island Weather Forecast: A Mild Midwinter with Precipitation

Current Conditions and Forecast for January 24

Today marks the climatological midpoint of winter, the coldest time of the year in Rhode Island based on average daily temperatures. However, it’s worth noting that the state has historically experienced even colder temperatures in February.

Morning Commute and Afternoon Conditions

The morning commute will be dry, but cloud cover will increase throughout the day, bringing rain and snow by the afternoon. There’s a slight chance of sleet as well.

Temperatures will remain relatively mild during the afternoon, preventing any significant snow accumulation.

Evening Transition and Potential Snowfall

As temperatures drop in the evening, the rain and snow mixture will transition to all snow. Untreated roads, steps, and sidewalks may experience snow accumulation, with a coating to 2 inches possible, particularly in areas away from the south coast.

Forecast for January 25

Wednesday morning may start with rain and snow showers, but precipitation is expected to quickly transition to rain showers and drizzle. High temperatures will reach approximately 40 degrees Fahrenheit in the afternoon.

Rain showers and drizzle are likely to persist throughout the day on Wednesday.

Looking Ahead: Milder Temperatures and Precipitation

Milder temperatures are anticipated on Thursday, with highs reaching the low 50s. However, there is a chance of rain during the day. This warming trend is attributed to the configuration of the jet stream, which will transport milder air from the deep south into the Northeast region later this week.

High temperatures on Friday are also expected to be around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
