Novak Djokovic Battles Through Heckling, Finds Rhythm in Australian Open Second Round Win
Djokovic Prevails Despite Heckler, Sets Up Etcheverry Clash
In a captivating second-round encounter at the 2024 Australian Open, Novak Djokovic found himself facing not only his opponent, Alexei Popyrin, but also a persistent heckler who disrupted the Serb’s focus. Despite the distraction, Djokovic persevered, securing a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 victory to advance to the third round.
A Confrontation on Court
Midway through the match, Djokovic confronted a fan who had been heckling him relentlessly from the stands. The exchange, which occurred during a changeover, saw Djokovic invite the heckler to come down and say whatever he wanted to his face. However, the spectator declined the invitation.
Djokovic, visibly agitated by the incident, expressed his frustration to reporters after the match. “There were a lot of things being told to me on the court, particularly from that corner and the same side the other corner,” he said. “I was tolerating it for most of the match. At one point I had enough, and I asked him whether he wants to come down and tell it to my face.”
A Possible Catalyst for Intensity
Djokovic admitted that the confrontation may have inadvertently served as a catalyst for him to find his rhythm and intensity on the court. After a somewhat flat start to the match, Djokovic played with renewed focus and determination, eventually overpowering Popyrin in the crucial moments.
“Maybe that was needed for me to be shaken up a bit and start to find the kind of intensity on the court that I needed to have all match,” Djokovic said.
Navigating the Atmosphere and Fan Behavior
Djokovic acknowledged that while he respects the fans’ right to express themselves, he draws the line at behavior that crosses the line. He emphasized that he would never ask for someone to be removed from the stadium, as long as they remain within the bounds of acceptable behavior.
“People have a few drinks … I guess late at night as well, that probably also has an effect on how they feel and behave,” he said. “That’s OK. People pay tickets to come and watch us. They want to see the show. They want to have fun. They’re allowed to do that. There’s no issue in terms of I never asked anyone to leave the stadium.”
A Hard-Fought Victory
Djokovic’s win over Popyrin was far from easy. The match hinged on a crucial 10th game in the third set, where Djokovic saved four set points to hold serve and eventually win the tiebreak. This momentum shift proved decisive, as Djokovic went on to seal the victory in four sets.
Looking Ahead
Despite not playing at his highest level in the first two rounds, Djokovic remains confident in his ability to raise his game as the tournament progresses. He is set to face Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry in the third round, a player he knows will be a tough opponent.
“I haven’t been playing my best, I’m still trying to find my form,” Djokovic said. “Particularly in the early rounds, you play players that have nothing to lose really. They come out on the center court and try to play their best match, their best tennis, and I think both my first and second-round opponents were great quality tennis players.”
Gauff Sets Up All-American Clash
In other news from the Australian Open, Coco Gauff set up an all-American clash in the third round after defeating compatriot Caroline Dolehide in straight sets. Gauff, who is yet to drop a set in 2024, will face Alycia Parks, who stunned 32nd-seed Leylah Fernandez to reach the third round of a grand slam for the first time in her career.
