Pittsburgh Weather Forecast: January 25, 2024 – Rain, Fog, and Rising River Levels

Rain Showers, Dense Fog, and Potential Flooding

Good morning, Pittsburgh! It’s Thursday, January 25th, 2024, and we’re in for a wet and foggy day. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a weather advisory as the city experiences a combination of rain showers, dense fog, and rising river levels.

Sporadic Rain and Foggy Conditions

Yesterday’s rain brought about half an inch of precipitation to the city, and today we can expect another quarter to half an inch. The rain showers will be sporadic throughout the day, with heavier downpours expected in the late afternoon and evening.

In addition to the rain, dense fog has enveloped Pittsburgh, reducing visibility and creating hazardous driving conditions. A Fog Advisory is in effect until 10 a.m., and similar conditions are anticipated tomorrow morning. Motorists are urged to use caution and allow extra time for their commutes.

Concerns Over River Flooding

The combination of rain and warm temperatures has raised concerns about river flooding. The Youghiogheny River at Connellsville is currently under a Flood Watch, and the Ohio River at the Point is forecast to reach its action stage, peaking at approximately 20.6 feet on Friday afternoon. At this level, flooding is anticipated along the Riverwalk on the North Shore, prompting the closure of the Mon Wharf parking garage.

Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to take necessary precautions and monitor the situation closely.

Temperature Outlook: Mild Today, Cooling Over the Weekend

Despite the wet and foggy conditions, temperatures in Pittsburgh are expected to remain mild. Today’s high will reach the mid-50s, with Friday morning being the warmest period of the week, reaching the upper 50s. However, temperatures will begin to cool down over the weekend, with highs in the 40s for both Saturday and Sunday.

Weekend Rain and Possible Snow

Another round of rain is expected to move through the area on Saturday evening and into Sunday. As the day progresses, the rain is likely to transition to snow. The NWS has not yet issued any Winter Weather Advisories, but residents should be prepared for slippery road conditions.
