Youth Entrepreneurship Academy in Plano: A Resounding Success
Move over, Silicon Valley! The year is and the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well among Plano’s teen scene. Plano Public Library, in cahoots with SCORE Dallas, just wrapped up their Youth Entrepreneurship Academy, and let me tell you, these kids are going places.
Twenty-one bright young minds from local high schools took the plunge into the world of business, and trust me, they dove in headfirst!
A Crash Course in Business Savvy
This wasn’t your average snooze-fest lecture series, folks. This academy was the brainchild of Julie Newport, a powerhouse entrepreneur herself, owning Wild Bill’s Western Wear and mentoring for SCORE Dallas. Julie knows her stuff, and she packed a whole lotta learning into a nine-hour program.
Think of it as business bootcamp, covering everything from brainstorming killer business ideas to navigating the shark tank of investor pitches. These teens got schooled in:
- Dreaming up innovative business ideas that’d make even Elon Musk raise an eyebrow
- Zeroing in on their target markets with the precision of a brain surgeon
- Mastering the art of teamwork and collaboration (because let’s face it, nobody wants to be stuck with a bad group project)
- Crafting sales and marketing strategies that could sell ice to an Eskimo
- Crunching numbers like a Wall Street whiz, figuring out costs and expenses
- Prepping for those nerve-wracking investor pitches, where dreams are made (or, you know, politely declined)
And the best part? They didn’t have to go it alone. These aspiring entrepreneurs had a whole squad of mentors cheering them on, including seasoned business professionals from SCORE Dallas and those ever-so-helpful librarians.
And the Award Goes to…
Now, what’s a good academy without a little friendly competition? The grand finale of the program was a nail-biting business pitch competition. Four teams, each armed with their brilliant business concepts, went head-to-head in front of a panel of community judges.
Talk about pressure! But these young entrepreneurs handled it like pros, delivering pitches that would make even the toughest investor crack a smile.
Meet the Future Tycoons: The Winning Team
Drumroll, please! The judges were blown away by the ingenuity and sheer brilliance of all the teams, but in the end, there could only be one winner. And the coveted first-place trophy goes to…

The team of Harshal Vinod Goswami, Reya Kalamkar, Alejandro Moreno, Taim Salamor, and Natalya Yin! These future Zuckerbergs wowed the judges with their innovative pet health monitoring device. Move over, FitBit for Fido, there’s a new game in town!
And let’s not forget the generous folks over at Credit Union of Texas, who sponsored the competition prizes. Way to support the next generation of business moguls!
A Round of Applause for the Future of Entrepreneurship
Judge Misty Hoyt, a force to be reckoned with in the business world, was blown away by the talent on display. “The innovative ideas these young adults presented were nothing short of remarkable,” she gushed. “Their understanding of business acumen at such a young age, coupled with their collaborative spirit and ability to encourage and support each other, was truly inspiring.”
Yeah, these kids are going places, and they’re taking the business world by storm!
