Robotic Combat Vehicles: Milrem Robotics Equips UAE Armed Forces with Advanced Unmanned Ground Systems
Unveiling the Future of Combat: Milrem Robotics Supplies 60 Unmanned Ground Vehicles to the UAE Armed Forces
In a groundbreaking move, Milrem Robotics, an Estonian company with significant ownership by the UAE-based EDGE Group, has forged a partnership to equip the UAE Armed Forces with 60 state-of-the-art Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs). This notable development was officially announced at the UMEX exhibition in Dubai and the International Armored Vehicles (IAV2024) conference in London.
The contract encompasses the supply of 40 units of Milrem’s THeMIS UGVs and 20 units of the larger, tracked Robotic Combat Vehicles (RCV), previously known as TypeX. These cutting-edge UGVs will form part of the initial operational trial program with the UAE Armed Forces, paving the way for a potentially larger order once the program is successfully completed.
Milrem Robotics and EDGE Group: A Collaborative Endeavor
Under the terms of this strategic partnership, Milrem Robotics will spearhead a comprehensive experimentation and trial program. This initiative aims to seamlessly integrate unmanned ground capabilities into the arsenal of the UAE Armed Forces. This collaboration represents a significant step forward in enhancing the combat capabilities of the Armed Forces by introducing advanced THeMIS UGVs and tracked RCVs.
These platforms are equipped with sophisticated autonomy features, third-party payloads, and exceptional communication solutions, offering unparalleled flexibility and adaptability in various mission scenarios.
Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “EDGE Group’s investment in Milrem Robotics has opened new avenues for us in the region, further expanding our international growth and market presence. This project underscores the strategic significance of incorporating advanced robotic systems into force structure, thereby elevating combat capabilities and operational efficiency.”
Unveiling the TypeX RCV and THeMIS UGV: A Symbiosis of Power and Agility
The TypeX RCV, a formidable tracked platform, boasts a weight of 12 tons and an impressive payload capacity of up to four tons. In contrast, the THeMIS UGV, a lighter and more agile platform, weighs approximately 1,630 kg and can carry a maximum payload of 1.2 tons.
Both platforms will be equipped with 30mm guns, further enhancing their combat effectiveness. The tracked RCVs will feature an armored turret armed with a 30x173mm MK44 cannon, while the THeMIS Combat units will be outfitted with weapon stations mounting 30x113mm M230LF Remote Weapon Stations and Indirect Fire Systems.
Additionally, THeMIS Observe units will be equipped with mast-mounted radar and camera systems, including advanced shot detection capabilities, providing unparalleled situational awareness and target acquisition capabilities.
Training and Support: Ensuring Operational Readiness
As part of this comprehensive contract, Milrem Robotics will provide thorough training and continuous supervision to ensure that the relevant personnel achieve proficiency in operating these combat unmanned ground systems. This training will encompass all aspects of operation, maintenance, and tactical deployment, ensuring the highest levels of readiness and effectiveness.
Unveiling the New 8×8 Wheeled Platform: Balancing Affordability and Performance
At the IAV 2024 event, Milrem Robotics unveiled a new 8×8 wheeled platform, designed in collaboration with an international customer, believed to be EDGE. This platform represents a significant advancement in terms of affordability and performance.
The platform boasts a length of six meters and a width and height of 2.7 meters, providing a similar surface area to the TypeX. However, it is expected to be more cost-effective than the Tracked RCV, making it an attractive option for various military applications.
In terms of performance, the new wheeled platform excels on paved roads, reaching speeds of up to 110 km/h, compared to the TypeX’s 80 km/h. Off-road, it can achieve a maximum speed of 50 km/h, providing exceptional mobility in challenging terrain.
Despite its lighter weight, approximately half that of comparable manned vehicles, the new wheeled platform delivers equivalent or superior performance, making it an ideal support platform for mechanized formations.
The Future of Combat: Unmanned Ground Vehicles Reshaping the Battlefield
The partnership between Milrem Robotics and the UAE Armed Forces marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of modern warfare. Unmanned Ground Vehicles are poised to revolutionize combat operations, offering unprecedented levels of autonomy, precision, and flexibility. The integration of these advanced systems into the UAE Armed Forces’ arsenal represents a strategic investment in the future of combat.
With the successful implementation of this partnership, the UAE Armed Forces will be at the forefront of technological innovation, setting a new standard for military effectiveness and operational efficiency.
