Sacramento State University Launches Groundbreaking Combat Sports Development Program

Combat U: A Pioneer in University-Backed Combat Sports Education

In a bold and innovative move, Sacramento State University has partnered with UFC Hall of Famer Urijah Faber to establish Combat Sports and Martial Arts University (Combat U), a first-of-its-kind collegiate training ground for aspiring professional fighters in mixed martial arts (MMA). This groundbreaking program marks a significant step forward in the recognition and support of combat sports as a legitimate and academically enriching field of study.

Unparalleled Training and Competition Opportunities

Combat U will provide students with an exceptional training environment, featuring expert instruction from current professional fighters, former world champion kickboxers, and experienced boxing coaches. The program’s comprehensive curriculum encompasses a diverse range of combat sports disciplines, including boxing, wrestling, muay thai, and jiu-jitsu, catering to the individual interests and strengths of each student.

Students will have the opportunity to train alongside elite athletes and compete at the highest levels. Combat U will host regular intercollegiate competitions, providing students with valuable experience in a competitive setting. The program will also offer opportunities for students to participate in international tournaments and training camps, further enhancing their skills and exposure.

A Commitment to Educational Excellence

While pursuing their passion for combat sports, Combat U students will concurrently engage in rigorous academic coursework. The program is meticulously designed to ensure that students receive the necessary educational foundation to succeed in their chosen career paths, whether they aspire to become professional fighters or pursue other endeavors.

Students will take courses in a variety of subjects, including kinesiology, nutrition, psychology, and business. They will also have the opportunity to work with academic advisors to develop individualized degree plans that align with their interests and goals.

A Legacy of Champions and Educational Accessibility

Sacramento State President Luke Wood expressed his enthusiasm for the transformative impact that Combat U will have on the lives of its students. He emphasized the university’s commitment to attracting, developing, and mentoring promising prospects from around the world, creating a legacy of champions while upholding its mission of educational accessibility.

“Combat U is a game-changer for Sacramento State and for the world of combat sports,” said Wood. “We are thrilled to partner with Urijah Faber, a true legend in the sport, to create a program that will provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed both in the ring and in the classroom.”

World-Class Coaching and Training Facilities

Combat U will operate under the auspices of the University’s Department of Athletics and will collaborate closely with Ultimate Fitness, a renowned MMA gym located near the campus. This partnership ensures that students have access to state-of-the-art training facilities and the expertise of world-class coaches, including Faber himself.

The Combat U training facility will feature a full-size MMA cage, a boxing ring, a wrestling mat, and a weightlifting area. Students will also have access to a team of experienced coaches who will provide personalized instruction and guidance.

A Path to Success Beyond the Ring

Faber, a respected figure in the MMA community, emphasized the program’s dual focus on athletic excellence and academic achievement. He believes that Combat U participants will not only receive elite training but also acquire the educational background necessary to thrive in their chosen careers, regardless of whether they pursue professional fighting.

“Combat U is about more than just fighting,” said Faber. “We are committed to providing our students with the tools they need to succeed in all aspects of their lives. We want them to leave our program as well-rounded individuals who are prepared for whatever the future holds.”

Safety and Sports Medicine Support

Recognizing the physical demands of combat sports, Combat U students will have access to the same level of safety and sports medicine support as other competitive athletes at Sacramento State. This comprehensive care will ensure that students can train and compete with confidence, knowing that their well-being is a top priority.

Students will have access to a team of experienced sports medicine professionals who will provide injury prevention and treatment services. They will also have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including a rehabilitation center and a hydrotherapy pool.

Upcoming Orientation and Program Launch

The inaugural orientation meeting and workout opportunity for prospective students will take place on Thursday, January 23, 2024, at Faber’s Ultimate Fitness gym. The Combat U program is scheduled to officially launch in the Fall 2024 semester, marking a new era in combat sports education and providing aspiring fighters with an unparalleled opportunity to pursue their dreams while receiving a world-class education.
