Connecticut Consumer Protection Warns: Sports Betting Only Allowed on Licensed Platforms

Illegal Wagering, Even Super Bowl Squares, Without a License

HARTFORD, CT (January 2024) – As the NFL playoffs heat up and Super Bowl LVIII approaches, the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) is issuing a stern reminder: it is against the law to engage in sports wagering, including selling Super Bowl Squares, without a valid license in the state.

Authorized Platforms and Licensed Establishments

Connecticut residents and visitors seeking to legally place sports wagers have three online platforms at their disposal:

– DraftKings, in partnership with Foxwoods Casino.
– FanDuel, affiliated with Mohegan Sun.
– Fanatics, associated with the Connecticut Lottery Corporation.

For those who prefer in-person betting, Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Casino offer retail sports wagering facilities within their respective casinos.

Additionally, ten retail locations licensed through the Connecticut Lottery Corporation are authorized to accept sports wagers:

– Arooga’s Grille House & Sports Bar in Shelton.
– Bobby V’s in Stamford and Windsor Locks.
– Shea’s in Manchester.
– Sports Haven in New Haven.
– Winners in Hartford, New Britain, Milford, and Waterbury.
– XL Center in Hartford.

Unlicensed Wagering Prohibited

The DCP emphasizes that all other bars, restaurants, and establishments are strictly prohibited from selling Super Bowl Squares or engaging in any form of gambling.

“With the NFL playoffs reaching their climax and the Super Bowl just around the corner, we want to remind both businesses and consumers that offering wagers without a license is a clear violation of the law,” declared Bryan T. Cafferelli, Commissioner of the DCP.

Responsible Gambling and Support Resources

The DCP encourages adults who choose to gamble to set limits on their time and money spent. Additionally, resources and information are available for individuals struggling with gambling problems or those concerned about a loved one’s gambling habits.

The Connecticut Council on Problem Gaming operates a confidential 24/7 Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-888-789-7777. Individuals can also chat with a counselor online or visit the Council’s website at www.ccpg.org for further support.

Information on problem gambling services and self-exclusion options is also accessible through the state portal at portal.ct.gov/problemgaming and ct.gov/selfexclusion.
