Birmingham’s Weather Forecast: Preparing for the Upcoming Weekend’s Wet Conditions

Overview: A Blend of Clouds, Showers, and Potential Thunderstorms

Birmingham, Alabama, brace yourself for a weekend marked by cloudy skies, scattered showers, and the possibility of thunderstorms, as predicted by the reliable meteorologists at WBRC. Residents should exercise caution, as localized flooding and gusty winds may accompany the inclement weather.

Friday’s Forecast: Patchy Fog and Late-Night Showers

Friday morning commuters may encounter patchy fog between 7 and 11 a.m., a result of lingering moisture in the air and gentle northerly winds. Throughout the day, cloudy conditions will prevail, setting the stage for showers and thunderstorms later in the evening and into Saturday. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid to upper 60s, with light evening winds shifting direction to blow out of the southeast at a speed of 5 mph. Rain chances are estimated at 40%, increasing overnight as another surge of showers and thunderstorms approaches Saturday morning. Counties situated north of Interstate 20 may experience drier conditions, providing a window of opportunity for outdoor activities and errands.

Flood Watch Issued: Safety First

A Flood Watch remains in effect for Central Alabama until 6 p.m. on Saturday, emphasizing the need for vigilance and caution. Residents are strongly advised to avoid flooded roadways. If you encounter a flooded road, do not attempt to cross it; instead, turn around to prevent potential drowning incidents.

Saturday’s Forecast: First Alert Weather Day

Saturday has been designated as a First Alert Weather Day due to an approaching low-pressure system that is expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts. Widespread wet weather may begin as early as Friday night and gradually taper off by Saturday afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a marginal risk (Level 1 out of 5) for much of central Alabama and a slight risk (Level 2 out of 5) for areas south and east of Interstate 20/59. While the severe weather threat appears low, isolated strong to severe storms may occur, bringing localized damaging wind gusts, particularly in east-central Alabama. Heavy rainfall poses a significant threat, potentially leading to localized flooding. An additional one to two inches of rain are expected, bringing total rainfall to five to six inches across parts of the area over the past week. If severe thunderstorms do occur, they are most likely to happen between late Saturday morning and before 4 p.m. The main weather system is expected to depart by Saturday around lunchtime, bringing relief from the persistent downpours.

Sunday’s Forecast and Beyond: Gradual Drying Conditions

Sunday will bring lingering showers in the morning, followed by gradual drying conditions. Cloudy skies will persist, and temperatures will only reach the low 50s. Overnight temperatures into Monday morning will drop to the mid to upper 30s. Skies will clear, and colder conditions are expected through Wednesday of next week. Temperatures may rise above average, reaching the upper 50s and low 60s by the following weekend.
