Unveiling the World’s Largest Combat Robotics Program: UAE and Milrem Robotics Forge a Historic Partnership

In a groundbreaking move that signals a new era in military robotics, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Milrem Robotics have joined forces to embark on the world’s most ambitious combat robotics program. This monumental partnership, inked on January 24th, 2024, marks a pivotal moment in the integration of advanced unmanned systems into modern warfare.

A Milestone in Robotics Integration

The collaboration between the UAE and Milrem Robotics represents a significant leap forward in the field of military robotics. Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics, expressed his exhilaration over the partnership, emphasizing the competitive edge of their solutions and the strategic importance of seamlessly integrating advanced robotic systems into military operations. This agreement underscores the growing recognition among military leaders worldwide that robotic systems hold immense potential to enhance combat capabilities and operational efficiency.

Equipping the UAE Armed Forces

The agreement with Milrem Robotics entails the provision of cutting-edge robotic platforms tailored to various combat roles. The UAE Armed Forces will receive 20 tracked robotic combat vehicles (RCVs) and 40 THeMIS unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), significantly bolstering their military capabilities. These unmanned systems feature state-of-the-art autonomy features, enabling them to operate with precision and effectiveness in diverse combat scenarios.

The RCVs, armed with powerful 30mm MK44 cannons, are designed to deliver precise firepower and neutralize enemy threats. The THeMIS Combat units, equipped with 30mm M230LF Remote Weapon Stations and Indirect Fire Systems, offer versatile combat capabilities, including anti-tank and anti-personnel operations. Additionally, the THeMIS Observe units, featuring advanced radar and camera systems with shot detection capabilities, provide invaluable situational awareness and target acquisition.

Embracing Experimental Operational Phase

Recognizing the need for thorough testing and integration, Milrem Robotics will spearhead an experimentation and trial program as part of the contract. This initiative aims to seamlessly integrate unmanned ground capabilities into the UAE Armed Forces’ arsenal, addressing concerns about the maturity of UGV technology highlighted in recent operational fieldings. The program will focus on identifying and resolving issues related to mobility, reliability, and networking, ensuring optimal performance in real-world scenarios.

Bolstering VTOL Capabilities

The UAE’s pursuit of military unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) stems from its involvement in Yemen, as outlined in GlobalData’s report on the Global Military UAV Market 2022-2032. The acquisition of 200 HT-100 and HT-750 unmanned helicopters, designed for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) and logistics missions, will significantly enhance the UAE’s Vertical Takeoff and Lift (VTOL) capabilities. These unmanned VTOL systems, produced by ANAVIA, a Switzerland-based EDGE entity, excel in transporting heavy payloads while maintaining exceptional flight stability.

Khaled Al Zaabi, president of platform & systems at Edge Group, expressed his enthusiasm for this landmark order, representing the first by the UAE Ministry of Defence for these advanced aircraft and the largest ever for ANAVIA. This agreement exemplifies EDGE’s strategy of fostering mutually beneficial partnerships worldwide to expand its technological horizons.

UAE’s Current Rotary Fleet

As of 2023, the UAE’s rotary fleet comprises 167 transport and utility helicopters, 28 Apache attack helicopters, and an undisclosed number of RQ-1E medium altitude long endurance UAVs. The acquisition of these advanced unmanned systems further bolsters the UAE’s military capabilities, positioning it as a regional leader in defense technology.

A New Era of Robotics in Warfare

The UAE and Milrem Robotics’ partnership marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of military robotics. The integration of advanced UGVs and UAVs into the UAE Armed Forces signifies a paradigm shift in warfare, emphasizing the importance of technological prowess in modern combat operations. This collaboration sets the stage for future advancements in unmanned systems, shaping the landscape of military engagements for years to come.
