On February 17, 2024, the City of Burbank’s Parks and Recreation Department will host the inaugural Burbank Adaptive Sports Expo at McCambridge Park. This free and open event, running from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., aims to provide a day of inclusive sporting activities for individuals of all ages and abilities.

A Day of Inclusive Sporting Activities

The Burbank Adaptive Sports Expo is designed to offer a diverse range of adaptive sports, allowing participants to engage in activities tailored to their abilities. From wheelchair rugby and tennis to boccia, power wheelchair soccer, chair yoga, and visually impaired Judo, there’s something for everyone. Additionally, a resource fair featuring informational booths will provide valuable information and support to attendees.

Fostering Inclusivity and Recognizing Abilities

“The Adaptive Sports Expo serves as a vital platform for individuals with disabilities to showcase their remarkable talents, unwavering determination, and resilience through participation in high-quality sports and physical activities,” expressed Burbank Mayor Nick Schultz. These recreational opportunities not only enrich the lives of participants but also cultivate a sense of inclusivity and belonging within the community.

Enhancing Quality of Life and Promoting Personal Growth

“Our vision for the Burbank Adaptive Sports Expo is to establish a comprehensive, innovative, and diverse range of programs that empower individuals of all ages and ability levels to participate in activities that enhance their quality of life, boost self-confidence and self-esteem, and assist them in overcoming challenges and achieving personal goals,” stated Marisa Garcia, Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Director for the City of Burbank. The event is made possible through collaborations with organizations such as the Triumph Foundation, SoCal Adaptive Sports, Hearts for Sight, ACEing Autism, the Burbank Tennis Center, and Raising Cane’s, all dedicated to encouraging participants to surpass their limits.

Raising Awareness and Challenging Stereotypes

Through initiatives like the Adaptive Sports Expo, the City of Burbank aims to raise awareness about the capabilities of people living with disabilities, challenge prevailing stereotypes, and foster a more inclusive society.
