The Scholastic Sports Zone: A Central Mass. Institution Celebrates Years
Sundays in Central Massachusetts just wouldn’t be the same without it. The familiar crackle of the radio, the upbeat jingle, and then that voice – Howie Kahn’s voice – welcoming you back to the Scholastic Sports Zone. For a decade and a half, this weekly radio show, broadcasting on WPKZ 105.3 FM and 1280 AM every Sunday from 11 a.m. to noon, has been the go-to source for all things high school sports in the region.
Kahn, along with his co-hosts Dan Beaulac, Justin Lowe, and Tommy Santasania, bring a contagious passion for local sports to the airwaves. It’s not just about game scores and stats (though you’ll definitely get those too!). It’s about the heart, the hustle, and the sheer joy of high school athletics, told with humor, insight, and a genuine love for the game.
A History of Fun and Dedication
Think back to April 10, 2010. The iPad was brand new, “Tik Tok” meant absolutely nothing to you, and the very first Scholastic Sports Zone hit the airwaves. The guest that day? None other than Worcester native and former Red Sox manager, J.P. Ricciardi. Talk about starting strong!
From that memorable first show, the Scholastic Sports Zone has been building a legacy of laughter, community, and unforgettable sports moments. We’re talking on-air ice cube fights (things can get heated when you’re passionate about sports!), heartwarming donations of AED machines to local schools, and countless interviews with the rising stars of Central Mass. athletics.
What’s the secret sauce? It’s simple, really. The show thrives on its natural, conversational format. Listening in feels like you’re sitting around with a bunch of friends, talking sports. The hosts’ genuine love for the game, and their respect for the players and coaches, shines through in every segment.
Meet the Crew
Every great show needs a great crew, and the Scholastic Sports Zone is lucky enough to have four!
Howie Kahn: The man, the myth, the legend! Howie is the energetic founder and heart of the show. His passion for local sports is contagious, and his dedication to showcasing the talents of young athletes is truly inspiring.
Dan Beaulac: Think of Dan as the point guard of this operation. As producer, he’s the one keeping everything running smoothly, making sure everyone hits their mark, and ensuring a seamless listening experience.
Tommy Santasania: A mainstay since 2015, Tommy brings a wealth of coaching experience and insightful commentary to the table. He’s got the inside scoop and isn’t shy about sharing it!
Justin Lowe: The newest member of the crew, Justin brings a fresh perspective and infectious enthusiasm to the show. He’s a walking encyclopedia of local sports knowledge and a true champion for the high school athletes of Central Mass.
